In the podcast, S suffers from his thoughts. Not knowing if the thoughts he is having is what he actually wants to do. I believe our thoughts define us to an extant. Meaning like S has thoughts to murder his wife and rape and kill other people, but when given the chance he doesn't take it. S is not a murderer he simply has thoughts that are caused by something else. Which is why I think thoughts define you to an extent. Negative thoughts that most people have everyday for example, "I'm not good enough", "Nobody will ever love me"... is what I think defines us because essentially those thoughts are due to low self - esteem. I guess its where the thought is coming from that defines you.

  1. I agree with Annabelle. In the podcast it mentions when S has to put a knife to his wife neck and put his hand around his dog. At first he was afraid that he would actually clinch his hand really choke the dog, but it was only his thoughts. Your thoughts may control your actions, but thats to an extent. For example, if I'm thinking about going down to LBJ and get a chick fli, can. Now if I think about getting on a airplane to fly out to New York to eat a cheesecake is just a thought.
There were 3 phases that were also mentioned. The one that stood out to me the most was if you talk it out with your friends or family. It can really help you out mentally, since your not holding all of that negativity inside you.

  2. I completely agree with you Annabelle. Everything you perceive in your head will cause you to act and perform a certain way. Your thoughts may have absolutely nothing to do with who you really are. You may think about something that has already happened but change up particular parts that will eventually change the story entirely. Your attention should be connected to your thoughts. Being able to separate one idea from another will help you stay in control of your thoughts.

  3. Although I do agree with what Annabelle says about how our thoughts define who we are to an extent, I don’t believe the negative thoughts defines us due to having low self-esteem. I believe that even a person with a high self-esteem can have a negative thought, at some point in their life, of thinking, “I’m not good enough”, because not everyone is perfect. Everyone has flaws in their own way. So it wouldn’t define who you are it would just simply be a “negative thought” about yourself that will put you down. You can either choose to listen to it or eventually not pay attention to it as S had finally did.

  4. I agree that your thoughts define you to a certain extent in certain ways because, not all thoughts that we have we are likely to act on. For instance, like S he was having dark thoughts about murdering his wife, or strangling his dog. Those kind of thoughts do not define us, and are a mere formation of something that we may have experienced, or watched, like S did after watching that movie. We constantly have thoughts going through our mind, but not every thought we have means something. Some thoughts may reflect how who we are, but again, to a certain extent.

  5. I agree with all of the above commenters and blogger. I believe whatever you perceive in your head manufactures what comes out. This leads to how you act and speak in a certain way. Sometimes we can suffer with our thoughts, just because we think something does not necessarily mean we want to do it. I also agree with it depends on where the thought comes from that determines whether or not that is truly “your” thought. Your thoughts do not have to be actions, it depends on you as the person in control. Although, sometimes we do not seem to have control over our actions. I also like the part where the speaker mentions the three phases. I do believe talking things out and communicating with others can truly help you resort to appropriate actions.
