Why Can't We All Just Get Along?
The central argument in this article is about the rationality of human moral judgement and how humans behave when exposed to certain situations. Do people's responses have to do with the emotional parts of their brains, or a more logical thought. For example, Wright mentions Joshua Greene's trolley experiment which will kill five people if not stopped unless a lever is pulled and falls killing only one person instead. Whether people would choose to not kill anyone and let the five people die, or pull the lever and have four people live is the argument. Some people are swayed by an emotional response in their brains because they rather not be blamed for picking one person to die. While the logical reaction people just thought about how they could save more people by killing one. That being said, the central idea of this article deals with why it is people behave the way they do. Some people are more cooperative with others, but others can not seem to get along.

I think the thesis of this article is finding out the way people think the way they do. In this article Greene talks about doing brain scans on people while they are thinking about the situation of saving four people or killing one person to save the others. I think this does come down to your moral standards in life, but i think logically anyone right minded person would think more about saving the four people. But many people think about killing one person to save everyone else. Thats where the central idea of this article comes from, the different ways people may think about certain situations.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Melanie is saying. I think it also can connect with the article that we read about Greene. The way people think are all different and no one can exactly see what the other person is thinking in life. Us as people can all say one thing but think another in our head. People will always choose what they want people to know and what they want to keep hidden and in ways, this can show why people don't get along. Humans will definitely act differently depending on the situation they're in. They can act one way a person but when someone else comes along, change the situation and act different with them. People just can't get along because they think too differently.
